Purple Color in Women's Movement History

Purple Color in Women's Movement History

and Domestic Violence Awareness

It is always important to know the history of the Women's Movement. It helps understand the choice of the color purple and its evolution. Here, I am sharing with you an article from NCADV in United States.

Rose M Garrity explains also the life of the first shelters in USA at the beginning where they had to move  battered women from one place to another place. This practice was considered illegal.

The Government started to fund DV Shelters in the early 70s .

According to Rose M Garrity,

“The women’s suffrage movement utilized purple, white and gold in the early 1900s as those were the colors of the National Women’s Party,”

Rose M. Garrity, is the board president of National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) and long-time movement member. “The colors started over in England and symbolized purity, hope and loyalty.”

The "shine a purple light"

“As the battered women’s movement grew, they designated October as DV awareness month where they shine a purple light to show support of DV survivors,”

Our Picture represents a Purple Movement against the Domestic Violence and the "Feminicides" in French or  in UK English: Femicide  meaning Women murdered awareness in France.

There is a lot more to say about Domestic Violence and Shelters.
